Ultimate Guide to Merkel Rifles
A Rich History of Gunsmithing Excellence
Merkel is the last great brand of the old arms town of Suhl. Gunsmiths have worked in Suhl since the 1400s, according to recent findings. Germans consider Suhl to be a main gateway to the Thuringian Forest- a historic resource for easily accessible iron ores and wood for fuelling local ironworks. “The knowledge of the manufacture of noble rifles is deeply rooted in the collective memory of the people of this region,” Merkel reports. “With every hunting rifle produced here since 1898, Merkel Manufaktur bears witness to the artistry of its engravers, the sensitivity of its shooters, the skill of its gunsmiths and the genius of its engineers.”
Drawing from these deep roots, Merkel has mastered the art of generating new ideas from old knowledge. The company has grown to push the boundaries of the hunting world by consistently taking traditional gunsmithing to the next level.
Today, Merkel’s Suhl factory on the German Friedberg is one of the most modern production facilities for hunting rifles in Europe. It uses a unique vertical manufacturing model: steel is processed in the barrel forging plant, fine wood is selected for its quality and origin, and custom models can be handcrafted on site.
The result? World-class modern and traditional rifles. From the Helix range through to the famous K5 single shot rifles and beyond, Merkels have a reputation for excellence and are suitable for all types of deer species in the UK and boar on the continent.
